There's no reason to consider Tatkal or Premium Tatkal if you're planning even a few days ahead â those exist specifically for when General Quota is no longer an option.

Once you're inside the one-day Tatkal window and General Quota booking has closed for your travel date, you're choosing between Tatkal and Premium Tatkal (or accepting a waitlist/RAC risk).

- Can you book more than a day ahead? Always choose General Quota â it's cheaper, has no dynamic pricing risk, and has the same or better refund flexibility than either Tatkal option.
- Are you inside the 1-day Tatkal window and need certainty above all else? Premium Tatkal, accepting the price premium and zero-refund trade-off.
- Are you inside the 1-day Tatkal window and comfortable with some waitlist risk to save money? Regular Tatkal.

If you're weighing regular Tatkal against Premium Tatkal specifically because you're unsure about waitlist risk, it helps to actually look at the numbers rather than guess. Tatkal waitlists behave somewhat differently from General Quota waitlists since they're drawn from a much smaller, separately-allocated quota â but the same general principle applies: a low waitlist number booked right when the window opens has a reasonable shot at confirming, while a high number is a much bigger gamble.
