How to Change Boarding Point on Your IRCTC Ticket

Plans changed and you now need to board from a different station than the one on your ticket? IRCTC lets you update your boarding point online — without cancelling and rebooking — as long as you do it within the allowed window and the new station is on the train's actual route.

How to Change It Online

1. Log in to your IRCTC account (website or app).
2. Go to "Booked Ticket History" and select the relevant PNR.
3. Look for the "Change Boarding Point" option — it only appears if the ticket is still eligible (see rules below).
4. Select your new boarding station from the list of stations the train stops at between the original boarding point and your destination.
5. Confirm the change — you'll get an SMS/email acknowledgment.

The 2026 Time Window

As of 2026, boarding point changes can be made until preparation of the final chart — typically around 30 minutes before scheduled departure — a significant loosening from the older 24-hours-before rule. This gives you much more flexibility to make last-minute changes if your travel plans shift close to departure.

Once you confirm the new boarding point, there's no reverting it and no second change — double-check you've selected the correct station before confirming. If you end up boarding from the original station anyway after having already changed your boarding point in the system, you may be treated as boarding without a valid ticket for that station and could be charged the fare again plus a penalty. Make sure your actual travel plan matches whatever boarding point you've set before the train departs.

Why Not Just Cancel and Rebook Instead?

Changing the boarding point keeps your existing PNR, seat/berth assignment, and fare intact — cancelling and rebooking risks losing your confirmed seat if the train has since filled up, and typically costs a cancellation charge on top of a new booking fee. If your new boarding station is genuinely on the same route, changing the boarding point is almost always the better option over cancellation.

Does This Affect Your Fare?

Changing your boarding point to a station further along the route generally doesn't get you a refund for the unused distance — you paid for the original route, and the fare structure typically isn't recalculated for a shorter effective journey. The main value of this facility is convenience and flexibility around where you physically get on the train, not fare adjustment. If the fare difference matters significantly to you, cancellation and a fresh booking (accepting the cancellation charge) might be worth comparing against simply keeping the original boarding point and just travelling from there instead.

A Common Scenario: Missing Your Original Boarding Station

This facility is particularly useful if you realize in advance that you won't be able to reach your original boarding station in time — for example, if a connecting flight or bus is delayed. Rather than losing the ticket entirely by simply not showing up (which risks it being treated as a no-show with no refund), updating the boarding point to a later station on the same route — one you can realistically reach — lets you salvage the booking. Just remember this only works if you make the change before the final chart is prepared; once the chart is locked, a boarding point change is no longer possible regardless of the circumstances.
